Magnesium Magic: Boost Your Self-Care Routine for Deeper Relaxation

A guest blog by Danielle Anson, Soul Purpose Coach and Wellness Guide

Discover How Magnesium Products Can Help You Relax, Recharge, and Rebalance

Magnesium has been a true game-changer for my self-care routine, and I can’t wait to share how it’s helped me relax and restore balance. In this post, I'll guide you through how you can use magnesium bath salts, sprays, foods, and more to boost your self-care and bring more ease into your day.

I value simple, consistent self-care. It doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming -sometimes the smallest daily practices have the biggest impact on our well-being. It’s not about the occasional massage or spa day; it’s about the little things we do every day to nurture ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.

What is Magnesium Anyway?

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a key role in keeping our muscles, nerves, bones, and even blood sugar levels healthy. It's literally found in every cell of the body and is known to boost mood, support muscle recovery, improve exercise performance, and even promote better sleep.

Many people, though, aren’t getting enough magnesium from their diets, despite it being in everyday foods like nuts, cacao, and leafy greens.

I’ve personally found that when I make sure I’m getting enough magnesium, I feel calmer, more grounded, and even notice a difference in my energy levels. It’s also said to help ease anxiety, which is a huge plus for those busy or stressful days.

Why Magnesium is Essential for Relaxation

One of magnesium’s most important jobs is to support the hundreds of biochemical reactions happening in the body every single day. But when magnesium levels are low, it can lead to:

Increased stress

Anxiety or depression

Sleep issues (like insomnia)

Fatigue

Headaches

Muscle tension

Magnesium helps regulate the release of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, while also binding to calming receptors in the brain. These two actions work together to ease both the mind and body into a more relaxed state, helping to calm the nervous system and create a sense of inner peace.

By incorporating magnesium into your daily life, you can give your body what it needs to better manage these symptoms, and that’s where products like magnesium bath salts and sprays can make a big difference.

Benefits of Magnesium Bath Salts for Stress Relief

One of the first things I chat about with new clients is how to weave more self-care into their lives to reduce stress. This is such a key step in being able to tune into your intuition and trust yourself when making big decisions. Whether you're a business owner juggling all the things or someone feeling stuck in a job and needing to make a change, it's hard to tap into that inner knowing when stress is taking over.

We often start by looking at simple ways to relieve stress, and one thing that comes up time and again is a good, old-fashioned soak in the bath, especially with magnesium salts.

Did you know your skin is your body’s largest organ and does an amazing job absorbing what we put on it?

That’s why a magnesium salt bath is such a powerful way to boost your magnesium levels. Not only does it help relax tight muscles, but when you soak before bed, it doubles as a great sleep aid, helping you fall asleep faster and deeper. Here’s what’s happening: the warm bath relaxes your muscles, and as your body cools down afterward, it triggers your brain to get ready for sleep. Isn’t it incredible how in tune our bodies are?

One of my go-to products is the SO Relaxing Blend from Salt & Oil, which contains lavender and bergamot essential oils. The scent alone tells my mind it’s time to wind down. Add a candle, some calming music, and a good book, and it’s pure bliss. Just writing this is making me feel more relaxed!

How Magnesium Spray Supports Muscle Recovery

If a bath isn’t on the cards but you still want to give your nervous system some love, magnesium oil spray is a fantastic option. It’s also great for targeting specific muscles or adding a little extra self-care to your bedtime routine.

Despite the name, magnesium oil isn’t actually an oil - it has a more watery texture, and you can get it as a basic spray or with added goodies like lavender oil for even more relaxation.

The best part? It’s a more concentrated option than a bath, making it especially helpful for muscle recovery. By spraying it directly onto the area that needs attention, like sore or tight muscles, your skin quickly absorbs it, giving you fast relief.

I love using magnesium spray before bed. If I have sore muscles, I’ll spray about 6-8 pumps on my lower back, quads, or glutes. For sleep support, I often apply it to the soles of my feet or my neck and shoulders before I climb into bed - it works wonders for winding down!

One thing to note—if you’re new to magnesium spray, you might notice a slight tingling or itching sensation at first. Don’t worry, this is totally normal! In fact, it’s often a sign that your body is a bit low on magnesium, and the more you use it, the less you’ll feel the tingling. A good trick is to start by applying it to the soles of your feet, as most people don’t experience itching there. Of course, if you notice any ongoing irritation, it’s best to stop using and consult a medical professional.

Incorporating Magnesium into Your Daily Self-Care Routine

There are many ways we can start to incorporate more magnesium into our routines to support our body & specifically our nervous system, from the foods we eat to what we put on our skin. Here’s a few ways to simply & easily incorporate magnesium into your daily self-care routine.

Cacao - I like to have a warm cup of cacao when I meditate in the mornings, and this is a great way to boost magnesium levels at the start of the day. Not to mention the mental health boost from taking 10 minutes to sit quietly while you drink it.

Magnesium supplements - there are a range of supplements out there to help with your magnesium levels. Many have been curated to target specific things, such as sleep, digestion & muscle support. Do your research to find the best option for you.

Nutrition - many foods contain magnesium in different forms, so incorporating these into your diet is one of the simplest ways to boost your magnesium levels. Here’s 10 foods that are easy to find and add into your daily meals & snacks:

·         Whole grains including whole wheat & oats

·         Spinach & leafy greens

·         Quinoa

·         Nuts - Almonds, cashews & peanuts

·         Legumes such as black beans, chickpeas, lentils

·         Seeds such as pumpkin, sunflower, flax & chia

·         Avocado

·         Tofu

·         Bananas

·         Dark chocolate

Bath salts - as we discussed already, soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salts can be a great way to absorb magnesium through the skin. If you don’t feel like dipping the whole body though, you could also try soaking in a foot bath - you don’t need anything fancy, just a container big enough to fit your feet in some warm water!

Magnesium spray - there are two main times when you could incorporate this into your day. Firstly, after a workout, spraying on tired muscles to help recovery. And at the end of the day as part of your bedtime routine, either spraying it on the soles of your feet or elsewhere on your body.

Embrace the Power of Magnesium in Your Self-Care Rituals

Incorporating magnesium into your self-care routine is a simple yet powerful way to support your body, ease stress, and promote relaxation. Whether you’re soaking in a magnesium bath, using a spray to soothe tired muscles, or boosting your intake through foods and supplements, there are so many ways to enjoy the benefits of this essential mineral.
